From Maker to Manufacturing is a podcast about what it really takes to grow a handmade business. When you are growing a business it can be very easy to compare yourself to others who have been in business longer then you have and feel defeated about what you have accomplished. Instead of comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle, why not learn from them and get real advice on how to grow your business.
The podcast is hosted by Sarah Cooley, Founder and CEO of Simply Curated. Sarah learned first hard that growing a business takes a lot of hard work and money. A native New Yorker with an eye for detail, Sarah wanted to come up with creative ways to use the vintage cocktail glasses she was finding at estate sales. It was suggested that she re-invent their use by pouring candles into the original glassware, and from there, the business truly began. She made it her mission to create scents that were original, non-toxic and phthalate-free. She perfected the art of pouring candles with 100% soy wax and crackling wood wicks that were both sourced in the US.
Sarah began selling them in local markets and receiving praise for the originality. She realized that her business could go beyond the original vintage cocktail glassware and grow into a more scalable & sustainable operation. A few years later, and after a few essential branding boosts, Sarah began designing her own patterns for glassware, screenprinted in 22k gold; each design is scent-specific and re-usable for drinking after burning.
In the fall of 2014 Sarah moved herself, and the business, to Grand Rapids Michigan and in 2015 she hired her first employee. Now Simply Curated is a team of three still pouring every candle by hand and lovingly packing orders for stores all over the world.
